Ocean Traveler Foundation: Currently, at the end of September 2025, the Ocean Traveler Foundation is being established. Once Hilmar returns from Canada and all arrangements have been made with the prospective board members, a notary will be contacted to finalize the incorporation. The foundation is expected to be operational by the end of January 2026. The foundation will primarily handle the acquisition, management, and maintenance of the ship, and finance the expeditions. To this end, the foundation will recruit funds, sponsors, and donors. Passengers can also join the sailing at various times for a fee, with the proceeds benefiting the foundation. A pleasant online store will also be launched, featuring beautiful jewelery (made by the American Artist Roland st. John) associated with Ocean Traveler. All the profit will entirely support the foundation. Marco and Hilmar will fund their own time and direct expenses, such as safety training and all diving- and film equipment.
Wildlife cineast: Hilmar DerksenAfter several months of apprenticeship with Canadian nature filmmaker Maxwel Hohn, Hilmar is ready for the Ocean Traveler Expedition: capturing nature restoration! Hilmar has been filming above and (especially) underwater for some time now, and he posts extensively on his YouTube channel BiovlogWild. Hilmar has known and proclaimed since he was 6 that he wanted to be a biologist. Since his first scuba dive at age 10, between his mother and father in Lake Grevelingen in Zeeland, Hilmar has known and proclaimed that he wanted to be a marine biologist. And he has done everything he could to achieve that dream ever since. In 2022, Hilmar did graduate at Wageningen University with a degree in marine biology. Previously Hilmar made a series about the underwater world of Lake Grevelingen for Dutch TV channel NTR. He also interned for the production of 'De Wilde Noordzee' (The Wild North Sea), where he filmed the behind-the-scenes footage. Skippers:
Marco Derksen (Europa)Sailing is in Marco's blood. As a child, he sailed with his parents in an open polyester boat. His own family started sailing on a cabin yacht on the Frisian lakes. First in a Midget 15, later a Jaguar 22. When the children grew older, a Friendship 22 was acquired, and Marco sailed extensively solo from Lelystad and the current port of Harderwijk. Around the coronavirus pandemic, the Friendship was sold, and Marco bought a slightly larger boat, an Etap 28i, with which he also sailed the Wadden Sea, our islands, the North Sea, and the Zeeland waters. Marco will skipper Ocean Traveler primarily in Europe. An experienced skipper is being sought for the Ocean Crossing, from whom Marco is eager to learn.
